A Personal and Musical Journey
through Klezmer Music with David Krakauer
Eugene Symphony and Lane Community College invite you to a special event with acclaimed clarinet virtuoso and composer David Krakauer. Krakauer will talk about doing Jewish roots music (first as a member of the Klezmatics and then as a bandleader of his own multi-genre projects mixing klezmer with hip-hop, rap, jazz and samples), and life in Europe in the late 1980s when the Berlin Wall was falling, Eastern Europe was opening up, and Jewish consciousness was rising all over the world with immensely increased interest in connection and new ways of looking across the divide.
Krakauer has an ever-evolving quest to create bridges and cross genre and cultural boundaries, which comes through in his ten-piece klezmer-hip-hop-funk band Abraham Inc., celebrating a coming-together of Jewish and African America music; the Keepers of the Flame project, Breath & Hammer, spotlighting bridge-building between music of different backgrounds; and his works as a klezmer innovator.
Hear how all of this has shaped his career path, illustrated with live performance and pre-recorded examples. A Q/A session will follow.
Price: Free, and open to the public.
Time: 12:00-1:20 PM
Location: Ragozzino Performance Hall
Lane Community College, Building 6, 4000 E 30th Ave, Eugene, OR 97405
